The Weekly Round Up: June 11-17

Welcome back to the Weekly Round Up!  I hope you had a good week.  Things are finally starting to get back to normal here at Earth|Unfiltered, after my shitty month of no internet, but unfortunately it’s anything but business as usual in the rest of the world- or at least anytime Trump and his government comes near any environmental issues.  This week we had lots of talk about the Paris Agreement, turkey vomit, and giant Australian turekys.  So without further ado, let’s dive in! Continue reading

The Weekly Round Up: June 4-10

Hi again.  It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, but now that I’ve got internet, I’m back here on a Saturday to bother you with all of the environmental news I found interesting this week.  There was a lot that went on this week, what with it being World Environment Day on Monday, Canadian Environment Week, and World Oceans Day on Thursday.  Outside of all of that, there were ancient birds, Macron trolling Trump, and whales in NYC.  So let’s dive in! Continue reading

The Weekly Round Up: April 10- May 6

What?!?!?!?  A new Weekly Round Up?  But we haven’t had one of these in weeks???  After dropping the ball for a few weeks, it’s back baby, in all its glory.  I’ve scoured the internet and grabbed for you a group of environmental news stories that I think you’ll enjoy.  I’m talking fish eyeball parasites, CRISPR-HIV research, and a pretty damn cool cuttlefish battle.  So let’s dive in! US Companies Challenge Trump’s Climate Change Ignorance

Well, like a monkey with a piece of shit, Trump is still flinging Executive Orders around all willy-nilly.  On Tuesday, Trump signed another executive order (I think he’s going for the record) that will essentially eliminate all the good that Obama did for the environment.  The order will help to dismantle the Clean Power Plan, lift the ban on coal leases, and make it so that the US has no hope of achieving the Paris Climate Change Agreements.  Like I said, he’s just flinging shit around at this point.  Fortunately, a handful of American companies are speaking out against this terrible decision. Continue reading

The Weekly Round Up: March 19-25

Welcome back to the Weekly Round Up!  This week was actually a pretty good week.  Sure, Trump issued a permit for the Keystone XL, coral reefs are in the shitter essentially globally, and Shell’s doing some real shady shit in Nigeria- but, scientists have reversed some of the signs of ageing in mice, plants can learn from environmental cues, and the dinosaur family tree might get a complete face-lift. So let’s dive in! Continue reading

There Might Still Be Hope For The States

So, we all know that the EPA is screwed, right?  Scott Pruitt lacks the basic knowledge concerning climate change and carbon dioxide to competently run the Environmental Protection Agency.  Fortunately, the American Meteorological Society is on his case already.  BUT, sweeping in from left field is US Defence Secretary James Mattis.  In some seemingly impossible way, Trump let in a man who believes, and understands the dangers of, climate change.  I think the US just won the lottery. Continue reading

The Weekly Round Up: March 5-11

I’m so conflicted over this week.  Look, there were some really great stuff that happened this week, and I should be ecstatic.  The VW emissions scandal is finally coming to a close, we might have a cure for face cancer in Tasmanian devils, and- drumroll please– Shell is divesting from the oilsands!!!!!  Unfortunately, the WHO released a real terrifying report, and Scott Pruitt is an absolute moron, definitely setting up some hard times for the environment in the states.  So yeah, it’s been a week- let’s dive in! Continue reading

The Weekly Round Up: February 19-25

Welcome back to the Weekly Round Up!  If this is your first time here, it’s nice to meet you!  Grab a seat, get comfortable, settle in- cause it’s been an interesting week.  We’ve got some shitty stuff- like more microplastics in our oceans than imaginable and an end to the on ground protests against the DAPL- but also some really great stuff- like California moving to save the environment from Trump and some bee research that is seriously cool.  Honestly, the bee research is real fascinating.  So without further ado, let’s dive in! Continue reading

What Makes A Climate Change Denier?

It didn’t take much for me to believe in climate change. In all honestly, I think it was an episode of The Magic School Bus that pushed me over the edge, and I’ve never looked back. The difficult thing is that I’ve never known what being a climate change denier is like, so I struggle trying to see others’ perspectives. To me, the scientific support of human-caused climate change is overwhelming! Yet, I still see campaigns and lobbyists actively arguing that the whole thing is a myth. Even the president of the United States claims that it’s a hoax made by the Chinese, because if there’s one thing China is known for, it’s their love of pranks.

I understand that there are political and economic motivations for wanting to challenge the legitimacy of climate change. It’s near impossible to find any industry that does not affect the environment in some way, either directly or indirectly. So when I see a spokesperson for Exxon Mobil or a politician question the science behind climate change, I’ve taken it with a grain of salt. What confuses me though is when I hear people of the general public reiterating those same views. They aren’t being paid to share these ideals, and if they’re in the same tax bracket as me, they certainly don’t have any large investments in the oil or coal industries. So why do they vehemently deny climate change? Continue reading

The Weekly Round Up: January 22-28

Holy shit this week was a mess.  Trump just can’t seem to quit being an all around awful human being, and because of it, the US is looking pretty broken right now.  It does explain all the rain we’ve been getting here though- it should be snowing, but since we live up above a giant flaming pile of refuse, it’s just too hot.  I honestly don’t know how to respond to any of it- it’s pretty shocking, disgusting, mindboggling, scary- so I’m just going to try and run things as per usual.  Things aren’t as per usual, things are anything but usual, but I need this to run the same.  So I know there is bigger news out there, I get that, but this news here will be the same as usual.  So, here’s the environmental news that caught my attention this week. Continue reading

The Weekly Round Up: January 15-21

We’re back with another weekly roundup and holy chipotle has it been a crazy week! A lot has changed in our world and we want to make sure you guys are kept up to date with what’s going on with our environment. While some may be furiously stocking their underground bunkers for the impending apocalypse, not all of our stories from this week are bad news. However there are still so many issues out there that demand our attention! So here’s our bag of news trail-mix!  Continue reading

Fire Up The Shredders! Exxon Mobil Told To Give Climate Change Documents!

Do I want to see the world become a sustainable, green, utopia? Of course! Am I enjoying the reality-show level shade that’s going on until we get there? Hell yeah! We got a big taste of that recently as Exxon Mobil was ordered, on January 11 by a Massachusetts judge, to hand over 40 years of documents related to climate change. This ruling comes after allegations were reported that the gas giant had extensive knowledge of gas and oil production effects on the climate, but failed to tell consumers and share holders in order to do business! THE SHADE! The reports go even further claiming that Exxon Mobil also actively sowed the seeds of doubt towards climate change in the public to undermine other’s research and publications! The Weekly Round Up: January 1-7

Welcome to 2017’s first Weekly Round Up (yaaaaaaaaaaaay!).  Similarly to the Round Ups in 2016, we’re going to be bringing you all of the past week’s environmental news that turned our heads.  AKA, we’re keeping the exact same format as last year- woohoo new year, new you!  Anyways, this week there was some dire news about our oceans, walruses playing with seabirds, and awful air in London.  So let’s dive in! Obama Blocks Arctic Drilling Until 2022…I Mean Until Trump’s Inaugeration

polar-bear-1509103_960_720

Barack Obama made news when he and his administration blocked oil drilling in the Arctic until 2022! The plan was met with mixed feelings from environmental organizations. Many like the CEO of WWF applauded Obama for this decision, while others said that the plan placed more stress on other areas, such as the Gulf of Mexico, that are in desperate need of protection. Regardless of how progressive the new plan is, it begs the question, is it worth making the plan and signing the bills since Trump will take office in a couple of months? Continue reading

The Weekly Round Up: November 13-19

seagull-79658_960_720

Welcome back to the Weekly Round Up, where we’ve decided to adopt the new headlines format (Yaaaaay!).  You’ve all spoken over the last few weeks, so it’s been decided that sharing the headlines of the articles that caught our attention over the week, is the best way to go.  This week had a lot of stuff.  Unfortunately, it’s mostly just people complaining about what a Trump presidency will mean for the environment (it’s bad) and how he’s going to put the worst people in charge of running environmental policies (not a surprise at all).  So we’re not including any of that.  We’ve talked about it before, the internet won’t stop talking about it now, and we would just be shouting into the void.  So instead, here’s the rest of the news that turned our heads this week.  Let’s dive in! Continue reading

The Weekly Round Up: November 6-12

golden-eagle-50713_960_720

Good morning everybody.  How’s it going?  I hope all is well, and that you are still sane after this crazy week.  I don’t know about you guys, but this week absolutely felt like a week.  Yep, there were definitely seven whole days in this one.  All that being said, I’m doing this fairly last minute again… sorry.  So once again, here are the headlines that turned our heads here at Earth|Unfiltered.  There were giant mystery snowballs, squirrel leprosy, and Cecil the Lion.  Let’s dive in! Continue reading

The UN Just Threw Some MAJOR SHADE At The Paris Climate Agreement!

windrader-408596_960_720

I love it when academics get catty, because it makes a bitch fight look way classier! Brace yourself because the United Nations just called out the Paris Agreement and all of its contributing countries in a new report that claims the agreement won’t do enough to offset climate change! Like that passive aggressive roommate we all have to live with at least once in our lives, the UN points out that the Paris Agreement is moving the ball forward in the right direction, but it’s moving slower than Donald Trump on the uptake (I’m paraphrasing here)!  Continue reading

The Weekly Round Up: October 23-29

landscape-1757244_960_720

Okay okay, so maybe we missed putting up an article yesterday, but there was nothing we could do.  I was working all day, and then had to watch Brian hit on straight men for an hour and a half.  So, you know, super busy.  Not to fear though, we’re back today with a new article.  We’ve got a week’s worth of news for you all today, so get ready.  This week had tree planting, clear cutting, and ancient life.  There’s a lot to go over, so let’s dive in. The Reviews Are In For Leonardo DiCaprio’s Doc “Before The Flood”

images-5

Anticipation has been mounting for Leonardo DiCaprio’s environmental documentary “Before The Flood”, which aims to mobilize humanity to stop climate change. The only thing that could be stronger than the message in the movie is the star-power! You know you’re in the big leagues when you are interviewing people such as Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and the Pope! This documentary has been deemed so important that it will be streamed for free by The National Geographic for the first week of its release. Some have begun to question whether this documentary will have the impact it intends to make, but we have gotten the first round of reviews, check them out below! Continue reading
